Caring for Australian-Greek Residents in Aged Care Facilities

This resource manual was produced as part of the work Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS) has undertaken with aged care services, in order to improve Australian Greek elderly choices of, and access to, high quality aged care services.

The Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care has provided funding to AGWS in order to undertake activities relating to the following areas:

  • Training, information and resource development
  • Best practice
  • Improving choice and access to services
  • Culturally appropriate assessment
  • We gratefully acknowledge the Commonwealth’s support to address the growing needs of older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CLDB) and Australian Greeks in particular.

The Australian Greek Welfare Society identified a need to compile a resource manual, aimed primarily at helping aged care workers to provide care that is culturally relevant to Greek residents.

The research involved interviews and discussions with staff and residents of mainstream and ethno-specific facilities, visiting adult day care centres and senior citizens clubs, as well as interviewing carers and the elderly within the community. The feelings, thoughts and experiences of some of these people have been included in the manual and offer some valuable insights into the needs of the elderly.

In an attempt to heighten staff awareness of issues, attitudes, norms and practices particularly pertinent to Greek residents, it seemed essential to include information on Greek culture, customs, religion, recreation, communication and cuisine. Each of these main sections comprises a list of recommendations outlining initiatives and strategies for staff to consider when aiming to improve the quality of care to Greek residents.

The recommendations are intended to guide staff in their efforts to enhance the quality and relevance of care to Greek residents. It is therefore essential for staff to assess the suitability of each recommendation in regard to residents individual needs. This qualification is inherent in all the recommendations made in this manual.
