Multicultural Information on Depression

Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS) in collaboration with Monash University are presently conducting a mental health survey within the Greek community. The aim of the research is to identify the specific needs of our community in respect to mental health. The target group for this research are Greece born people over 50 years of age.

We invite those interested in participating in this important research to contact either Nina Xarhakos at AGWS on 93889998 or Dr Litza Kiropoulos at Monash University on 85752202 to register their interest in taking part in an interview.

The interview consists predominantly of a series of multiple choice questions on mental health and related issues. Your anonymity is entirely assured and all interviews as treated as confidential. Your participation is vital in helping us to better understand the community’s level of knowledge and attitudes in respect to mental health as well as identified barriers and service access issues. More importantly it will assist us in developing resources and improving mental health services and helping to support those with such needs.

One of the main aims of this project is the establishment of a Greek language mental health website that will be a valuable resource for families, carers and health professionals and the community at large.

We look forward to your involvement in this research.

Mental Health Week 2006

Mental Health Week October 8 -14 2006 aims to activate, educate and engage Greek Victorians around mental health and related issues through the organisation of a Mental Health Forum in the Greek language to be run on Monday the 9th of October 2006.

The theme for Mental Health Week 2006 in Victoria is "Mental Health: What Do You Know?" asking each of us to expand our awareness and knowledge of mental health. The Forum will attempt to do this with a well-known Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist on the panel as well as a major Mental Health Service Provider in the Northern Region.

As part of "Mental Health Week", AGWS is organising an information session that will be held on Monday, 9th October at 7 Union Street, Brunswick.
