The Australian Greek Welfare Society’s Planned Activity Groups (PAG) provide opportunities for socialisation, respite and support for Greek speaking frail older people, people with disabilities and their carers within a centre-based environment. Our activity groups are offered in Preston, Sunshine, North Balwyn and Clayton and they are run by qualified and experienced staff.
The PAGs are aimed at assisting individuals to maintain their independence and connection with the community. The service is delivered within a Greek-specific context and in a manner that sensitively acknowledges individual needs and interests.
The AGWS PAG's provide:
• Programs that encourage participation in activities that cater for individual interests
and abilities;
• Activities that acknowledge Greek-specific customs, traditions and religious celebrations;
• Opportunities that address the social needs of individuals who are socially isolated;
• Support with personal care requirements;
• Specialist support for individuals with dementia
All group participants are invited to enjoy a range of centre and outings-based activities that are coordinated by the centre staff. The activities are aimed at encouraging independence and are underpinned by the principles of active living and positive ageing.
The range of activities offered include: Physical activity - Walking Groups - Crafts - Cooking;
Gardening - Music and dancing - Movies, Discussion Groups - Guest Speakers - Bingo Outings - Celebration Days.
Transport to and from the centre can be provided as required via taxi and participants are encouraged to use their multi-purpose taxi cards. However, we encourage participants to make their own transport arrangements if they are able to. A nominal cost is ALSO attached to the service to cover meals expenses. An additional cost may be charged where a special outings-based activity is arranged. If however participants are experiencing difficulty to meet this cost, fees can be waived following consultation with the Program Coordinator.
Admission to the program is dependent on an individual’s suitability for the required program and is determined via an assessment which is undertaken by qualified and experienced staff. Referrals to the program can be made by yourselves, the treating GP, local council, the local community health service or other family/friends.
