Generalist casework services continue to be a main point of contact for the Greek community in their efforts to obtain assistance on pertinent issues and access aged care and health services. This service provides information and referral, crisis intervention, advocacy and support, emergency relief and short term counselling. The demand for casework services has steadily increased particularly as the Greek community is rapidly ageing and the health and welfare issues impact on the well being of individuals.

Other services offered by the Community Services Unit include:

• Consultation to mainstream services
• Community education and training to groups and community leaders
• Cross cultural training to aged care and health services
• Research and program evaluation

In the 2007 -2008 financial year the casework service recorded a total of 1113 client contacts. These contacts were via the telephone, office appointments, drop in and referrals from community services, professionals and self referrals. Some of the issues that were presented included:

• aged care
• health including mental health
• carer’s issues
• financial difficulties
• drug and alcohol
• grief and loss
• family conflict including domestic violence
